Whether you’re a LEGO lover from childhood or still have an affinity with the colourful plastic blocks as an adult, you’re bound to be excited about the opening of LEGO House in Billund, Denmark.
More than four years after it was first unveiled, Bjarke Ingels Group’s (BIG) LEGO House has finally opened its doors to the public. The House is a true representation of the creativity that is at the core of LEGO and is expected to attract over 250,000 devotees annually.
The massive 12,000sqm building is a space to inspire creativity and to showcase past, present and future LEGO ideas. The building itself is filled with over a whopping 25 million LEGO bricks and provides children of all ages countless opportunities to play.
The overall form captures a certain childlike imagination while housing the practical elements of a public building. Three restaurants, a store, a conference centre and a public square, as well as four colour-coded “experience areas” are arranged across 21 ‘blocks’ before being topped with a huge scaled-up version of the brand’s famous 4×2 brick.
The brightly-coloured terraces aren’t visible from the plaza that surrounds the building, with passers-by instead only seeing the white ceramic tiles that the structure is clad in. From the roof, visitors can observe 360-degree views of the city where LEGO was founded in 1932.
LEGO House offers fans hours of active fun while at the same time engaging them in an educational and inspirational experience.
The aim of the visitor centre is to encourage creativity and to educate the public about the popular plastic brick – highlighting the flexibility and endless design possibilities of a modular element that has become one of the world’s most-loved toys for the young (and young at heart).
