PREFAB HOUSE DOUBLES AS A SLEDDING HILL

Imagine sliding down your roof. And actually enjoying it. Well, the residents of this two-storey house definitely have fun during the winter months thanks to their roof that transforms into a sledding hill.

Designed by Street Monkey Architects, this prefab house nestles into a steeply sloping site in Värmdö, an island in the centre of the Stockholm archipelago. The sledding ramp makes great entertainment for the children and ensures the volume of the house is camouflaged from the road, lessening its visual impact on the landscape.

The house is constructed with prefabricated steel and concrete modules, which were customised to suit the sloping roofline. As the tail end of the building is slightly sunken into the hillside, the roof slopes all the way down to meet the ground. This prompted the idea of repurposing the roof as a sledding area. The shape of the roofline also allows the building to support the weight of the heavy loads of snow.

The roof becomes useful during sunnier summer months too. It transforms into a roof terrace suitable for dining and entertaining and a party deck used well into the night.

Who knew a roof could be so much fun!
