Things We Love: Being A Part Of The Open House Melbourne Weekend

  • July 31st, 2017

Some things just get better with age – and the Open House Melbourne weekend is certainly one of them.

It’s an event that welcomes everyone – from those who work in the design industry to those who just love design – and encourages conversations about architecture and how our built environment shapes who we are and how we live.

Celebrating its 10th year, the Open House Melbourne weekend was bigger than ever before. Last weekend over 200 buildings threw open their doors and welcomed locals and visitors alike. It was a great opportunity for many to get up close and personal with the spaces that make this city unique.

A number of buildings were open to the public including the Old High Court of Australia, with its art deco interior and Beaux-Arts exterior, and the RMIT Design Hub, designed by famous architect Sean Godsell. There were also fascinating tours of buildings like Substation ‘J’ where large elements of the substation remain today, the Essendon Incinerator which now functions as an art gallery but has most of its engineering intact, and a rooftop tour of the world famous Council House 2, known for its sustainability functionality.

Modscape’s modular construction hub in Brooklyn was also open for curious visitors to explore. The Modscape design team have been attending the weekend event each year for the past decade but this year it was time to repay the favour and we thoroughly enjoyed being a host.

It was wonderful to see so many enthusiastic people go behind-the-scenes and discover how our modular homes and commercial buildings are created.

If you missed out on the weekend don’t fret – the Open House calendar of activities now extends past the popular weekend. On offer is a program of talks, tours, workshops and interviews that explore the issues, challenges and success stories of Melbourne’s built environment and celebrates excellence in design and our local industry.

Open House Melbourne’s goal is to ensure Melbourne remains a liveable and vibrant place by better connecting people with the city and educating our city’s future custodians on the importance of good design. We’re thrilled to help them do it and were very proud once again to be their Official Practice Partner, helping ensure Open House continues to showcase outstanding architecture for decades to come.
